Knauf Attic Insulation Nationwide

Knauf Attic Insulation: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Knauf attic insulation throughout San Jose, with most full-attic retrofits running between $1,800 and $4,700 depending on square footage, existing material condition, and R-value target. Our trucks carry Knauf EcoBatt and Jet Stream blown-in fiberglass, so same-week installation is the norm, not the exception. Most San Jose homeowners discover their attic insulation has failed when upstairs rooms run 8 to 10 degrees hotter than the rest of the house in August, or when the AC rarely cycles off during a heat wave that would make a lizard sweat.

Which Knauf Models This Applies To

Knauf makes two primary attic insulation lines that we install in San Jose homes: EcoBatt, which are pre-cut fiberglass batts, and Jet Stream, which is blown-in loose-fill fiberglass. EcoBatt comes in R-13, R-19, R-30, and R-38, sized for 2×4, 2×6, and 2×10/2×12 rafter bays. Jet Stream covers everything from R-11 to R-60 depending on depth.

Here’s where homeowners get tripped up: Knauf batts are friction-fit, meaning they rely on being slightly wider than the joist bay to stay put. If your house has non-standard joist spacing (we see 19.2-inch and 24-inch centers regularly in older San Jose neighborhoods like Willow Glen and Cambrian), off-the-shelf 15-inch or 23-inch batts will sag or leave gaps. Compression is the silent killer: a 10-inch batt squeezed into a 6-inch cavity loses a third of its R-value. For odd spacing, we cut batts to width on site or recommend Jet Stream blown-in, which fills every irregular cavity without seams.

On the OEM-vs-aftermarket question: for Knauf specifically, we use Knauf material. Matching density and binder chemistry matters. Aftermarket fiberglass with lower density settles faster and delivers less R-value per inch over time. Knauf’s own product carries a verified R-value certification, and for a Bay Area climate with 50-degree day-night swings, that consistency is what keeps your attic performing year-round.

Signs Your Knauf Attic Insulation Is Failing

  • Upstairs rooms won’t hold temperature. Batts have slipped, compressed, or were never thick enough for the job. The attic acts as a heat sink, and your HVAC is fighting a losing battle.
  • Visible settling or bare spots between joists. Blown-in Knauf fiberglass settles 2 to 4 percent over the first decade, but water intrusion, rodents, or old age can create bare patches that leak heat straight through the ceiling.
  • Cold drafts near ceiling fixtures in winter. Gaps around can lights, attic hatches, and wiring penetrations let conditioned air escape. Insulation can’t do its job if air is bypassing it.
  • Energy bills climbing year over year. In San Jose, PG&E rate increases get most of the blame, but degraded attic insulation quietly adds 15 to 25 percent to heating and cooling costs.
  • Rodent or water damage. Rats and squirrels nesting in attic fiberglass compress it, shred it, and contaminate it. Roof leaks do quieter damage, turning insulation into a matted, ineffective layer. If you spot droppings or water stains, the insulation is compromised.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a typical San Jose single-story home with a 1,200-square-foot attic, here’s what Knauf attic insulation replacement runs:

  • Blown-in Jet Stream to R-38 (the Bay Area code minimum for new work): $1,800 to $2,600 installed
  • Blown-in Jet Stream to R-49 (recommended by the Department of Energy for our climate zone): $2,400 to $3,400 installed
  • EcoBatt batts in exposed rafter bays, full attic to R-30/R-38: $2,800 to $4,700 installed, depending on access and bay count
  • Spot repair or top-up of existing blown-in (adding R-19 over settled material): $900 to $1,500

Every price above includes removal of old insulation where needed, air sealing around penetrations, full clean-up, and our written 365-Day Done Right Promise covering labor and materials. You’ll have the final number in writing before we touch the first batt. No post-job surprises, no “it turned out to be more than expected.”

DIY or Call Us?

Fiberglass insulation is uncomfortable but not dangerous when handled correctly. You can safely check your attic: measure existing depth in a few spots, look for bare areas, and check whether batts are sitting flush or sagging. What we don’t recommend is pulling up old contaminated fiberglass or crawling around on joists without proper PPE. Fiberglass in the lungs is miserable, and one misstep through a drywall ceiling costs more than the entire insulation job.

If you’ve got a different product in the attic than you expected, say Reflectix radiant barrier instead of Knauf, we stock and service that too. When the job needs a trained eye, a real quote, and a crew that shows up with badges and a written price, call us at (669) 220-7044. You shouldn’t have to guess whether your house is insulated right. Let’s just go up there and find out.
